Honorary PHD
Richard L. Thomas
Tragedy struck within days of Richard's engagement to his high school sweetheart, Viola as he was carried to the hospital suffering from flue like symptoms in 1954. A short time later Richard returned home bound to a wheel chair, without the use of his legs, for the remainder of his life having succumbed to polio.
The loss of his legs was far more than an inconvenience for this active young man and his determined sweetheart. Never again would they be able to twirl on the dance floor or enjoy the long walks of their courtship. Instead Richard was left to decide what he was going to do with his limited capacities.
Defiantly Richard resolved that, although handicapped, he was not disabled and he looked for opportunities to support himself and serve his community. With the aid of his Father and support of the community Richard obtained an automobile that was modified with hand controls. He took a correspondence course on watch repair and eventually opened up his first store, Thomas Jewelers, and he soon became known as the Ring Leader giving his competition a run for the money.
Richard's family grew and so did the business. His small enterprise grew into several branch operations covering the Northern Wasatch front and Richard began taking time from his business to serve the community. He traveled the countryside giving motivational speeches and encouraging the youth to make something of themselves. After serving as a municipal Councilor for the City of Logan, Utah for 12 years, Richard and his wife served a mission for his church, taking an early retirement from his business.
Richard's confidence and zest for life is a reminder to us all that the only disability in life is the one that exists in one's mind.
