Thomas Alan Fairbanks
Alan, who is a Navy Corpsman and assigned to a Marine Battalion, was injured by a grenade blast on Saturday November 19, 2005 in the area of Haditha IRAQ.
They were led into an ambush while clearing out insurrectionists. Air support had bombed a house in which one of the insurrectionists had entered but no one saw anyone leave after the air attack. The marines had thrown a grenade into the house just before they tried to enter but the insurrectionist, who had been hiding in the house directly behind the house in question, threw another grenade just moments before the first grenade explosion.
The second blast knocked the marines down. After the blast Alan stood up to continue his entry into the hose only to find himself on the ground again, having been injured in the leg. Alan and the marines continued their fire upon the house until accomplishing the securing of the area. (There were two incident on opposite sides of town in which 8 marines were affected. Unfortunately there was one casualty.)
Alan remained alert and involved throughout the fight, but his leg was shattered. I have been told that his leg looks like someone had taken a rock and smashed it into a windshield. Still connected but with spider cracks everywhere. He was transported to a hospital in IRAQ and was then flow to a military hospital in Germany for surgery that required the placement of a rod into his leg.
Alan’s tour of duty promptly ended and he was assigned to Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital.
